Companies today have access to an ever increasing treasure trove of data promising to ground critical business decisions in data rather than gut feeling.
The telecommunications business provides a wealth of diverse decision-making problems asking for the full toolkit of computer science:
from classical topics like combinatorial optimisation to the modern branches of data science and artificial intelligence.
We showcase tasks, solutions, and open problems around questions like:

* What should an optimal shop footprint look like in a world dominated by online sales?
* What is the best way to extend a fibre network?
* Can a marketing campaign be both parsimonious and wide-reaching?
* How should a chatbot react to Christmas greetings?

Rolf Bardeli is currently the lead data scientist in the consumer business unit at Vodafone Germany. He received his MSc (2003) and PhD (2008) in Computer Science from the University of Bonn, Germany. Between trying to teach the computer to recognize bird species by sound during his PhD and trying to teach the computer to understand telco customers at Vodafone, he was a researcher in multimedia pattern recognition at the Fraunhofer Society. Rolf is a senior member of the IEEE and a low-frequency maths blogger at http://mathcination.wordpress.com.
