"Large Language Models at Work: Retrieval, Authenticity, and Computational Social Science" | Prof. Dr. Benno Stein | Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Digital Bauhaus Lab

HeiCADLectures

Abstract:

The presentation provides a brief introduction to how large language models work. For selected applications we will then illustrate how this technology is transforming advanced areas of computer science and taking them to a new level. The examples cover problems in the fields of information retrieval, authorship analytics, and computational social science, for which we will provide theoretical and conceptual background information wherever possible. Our presentation does not remain at a general level, but is motivated by specific research questions and results from various research and teaching projects carried out by the speaker's working group, with example applications. During and after the presentation, we will provide ample opportunity for questions and discussions on the topic of artificial intelligence, including topics that could not be covered in the lecture.

About:

Benno Stein is chair of the Intelligent Information Systems Group at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His research focuses on modeling and solving data- and knowledge-intensive information processing tasks. Common ground of his research are the principles and methods of symbolic Artificial Intelligence. Benno Stein has developed theories, algorithms, and tools for information retrieval, data mining, computational linguistics, knowledge processing, as well as for engineering design and simulation (patents granted). For several achievements of his research he has been awarded with scientific and commercial prizes.
