AI literacy as a new focus

The KI:edu.nrw project is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a continuation of the KI.edu.nrw project with a new project structure under the umbrella of the Digital University NRW (dh.nrw). The new term for the project under the consortium leadership of the Center for Science Didactics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University and HHU is 2024 to the end of 2026.

In terms of content, the second phase of the overall project will focus on artificial intelligence, learning analytics and AI literacy. A new addition is the increased interlinking of generative AI and learning analytics. In this field of research, HHU will primarily focus on the topic of AI literacy.

The reason for this is the fact that, in addition to understanding data, the functioning of AI itself also requires a great deal of explanation, both to teachers and students. "We can only succeed in shaping the AI-influenced world of tomorrow if we engage with the technology and create skills," says Professor Martin Mauve, head of the sub-project and Director of HeiCAD. Last year, HeiCAD already established the online course AI for All to teach the basics of AI to all HHU students and anyone else who is interested.

With the new project, this approach will be supplemented and strengthened by the area of AI literacy. As part of the cooperation, HeiCAD will produce appropriate information material on the topic of AI literacy and develop training and advisory services as well as an online learning offer for more competence in dealing with AI for teachers and students at all NRW universities. Aspects such as how to deal with the sometimes very high expectations of further developments in the field of AI will also be addressed.
